The Draft
History
The United States has always had the draft lingering around as a back-up plan if the was a lack of people to enlist in the armed forces. However, in the year of 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt approved of the draft to be mandatory amomng all U.S. citizens. This act, required all male citizens between the ages of 18 and 25 to enlist in the armed services. There were strict consequences for failure to respond to the draft. Those consequences include: $250,000 fine, 5 years imprisonment, and no eligibility for loans, grants, passports, licenses, and jobs. Because of the severity of the consequences of not drafting, the government voided the Draft Act in1973, and made the military a volunteer thing only. However, this void was short lived, because the draft was rekindled in 1980 by President Carter.
